IntroductionThe title of this book was inspired by the headline on the back cover: “Tulia’s streets cleared of garbage.” A massive narcotics operation swept up 15% of the African American population of this town in the Texas panhandle. It was designed to get “trashy” people off the street. That’s how Tulia’s respectable folk characterized their famous sting and I believed them.Like any good story, Taking out the Trash is riddled with conflict. There is the conflict between the supporters and critics of Tulia’s big drug bust that you would expect. But most of the fireworks went off inside the rough-and-ready coalition on my side of the fight. My colleagues may wish I had kept some of the potentially embarrassing details to myself. If the differences I chronicle in this book were primarily a clash of strong personalities they wouldn’t merit as much attention as I have given them. B
( Not far from the tunnels) I have gone thru these tunnels many times in my youth and my Dad was bus driver for the MTA in Manhattan and drove thru the Holland to/from work daily. Excellent insight into Larry's family. The book expresses yes and no views and how the authors came up with their decisions. Great imagination, great envisioning of an alien life form. I've been so pleased with this book. It tells you how to do recovery. I could hear that accent in my head and what's better than a Scottish accent? Not much I tell you. While I agree with the fundamentals of his argument in favor of the Fair Not Flat Tax, I was consistently bothered by a question that he never addresses in the book. While that is fine and appropriate for stimulating imagination, children should also be given a chance to connect to situations closer to reality to stimulate character.
